Evolutor 

Founded in 2022, University of Sheffield spinout Evolutor is transforming industrial biotechnology through AI-driven microbial evolution. Their platform enables microbes to convert waste materials, such as used tires, into high-value chemicals and materials. Backed by SFC Capital and Deeptech Labs, Evolutor raised £315,000 in seed funding in 2024.

ReNewFood is a leader in the future of food innovation, pioneering precision fermentation to create protein-based ingredients for plant-based foods. A spinout from the University of Sheffield, their technology enhances taste and sustainability in alternative proteins. Backed by Big Idea Ventures and Deeptech Labs, the firm secured circa £300,000 in accelerator funding.

AEGIQ

Aegiq is developing quantum photonics hardware for communications. It also develops a photonics platform that entangles quantum computing nodes, and enables quantum resource distribution. A spinout from the University of Sheffield, Aegiq has raised over £3.5M in seed and grant funding from investors including HTGF, Quantum Exponential and Innovate UK. Their work places Sheffield at the forefront of next-generation computing and cybersecurity.

DEEP BLUE BIOTECH

Founded in 2023, Deep Blue Biotech uses synthetic biology and cyanobacteria to produce sustainable chemicals from CO₂. Their platform enables the production of high-value compounds like hyaluronic acid with minimal environmental impact. As the first resident of Sheffield Tech Parks’ shared lab, the company exemplifies the city’s commitment to innovation.
