Mission
A thriving urban ecosystem that provides the spaces and facilities for innovation led businesses to flourish.
by fostering connectivity, we enhance collaboration, and access to research excellence, talent and investment.
We are driving forward a culture of industry and societal problem-solving with pragmatic growth.
The Sheffield Innovation Spine is a city-wide project between the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, Sheffield City Council, The University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University, and Sheffield Technology Parks.
We are working with a breadth of stakeholders to enhance the region’s ability to attract national and international partnerships and investment.
By aligning resources and expertise, it addresses regional challenges, supports emerging industries, and connects research with enterprise, strengthening Sheffield’s position as a collaborative, forward-thinking hub.

Demand Led Development
Sheffield has seen a surge in the number of ambitious startups and spinouts. At present those businesses need to move from Sheffield to find those spaces, or create their own space dispersed across the city region.
By establishing a district for incubator space, labs and flexible workspaces, the Sheffield Innovation Spine supports the growth of innovation-led businesses. The project aims to connect and create innovation spaces within the city centre, delivering a cohesive ecosystem that supports business growth and attracts investment.

Sheffield is a city of innovators with existing spaces and facilities. We are promoting these existing spaces and facilities today and repurposing buildings to meet short-term requirements.
We are working with business to build the evidence base and make the case for investment in building retrofit and development sites. We are bringing forward sites around existing innovation spaces and facilities to support growing clusters.
The spaces and facilities will be in the most desired locations for companies to startup and grow, creating innovation clusters that capture the mixture of spaces needed for innovation-led businesses.
Now is the time to participate in the design of the Sheffield Innovation Spine.
